Before the first turn, see how hard the encounter looks. During the fight, keep a record of damage, conditions, and concentration. Afterward, review the rounds, experience, and damage each side dealt.
OpenFray’s free combat console enters beta with version 0.2.0. It runs DnD 5e fights in a browser tab, with nothing to install and no account required.
Open the console and add the creatures for your next encounter.
What’s new since the alpha
The alpha covered initiative, resources, effects, spells, group saves, and dice. The beta adds more ways to prepare and review a fight:
- More creatures to run. Basic Rules 2014, the three Tome of Beasts books from Kobold Press, and two OpenFray libraries join Basic Rules 2024. See the libraries below.
- Corrected reference entries. Basic Rules 2024 stat blocks and spells now come from the official rules document, correcting sizes, alignments, and casting times.
- Check the difficulty as you build. The footer’s encounter estimate changes as you add and remove creatures.
- Review the finished fight. The summary shows experience earned, its share per player, rounds, real and in-game time, damage each way, and three awards.
- Find what happened last round. The game log records turns, conditions, concentration, damage, healing, knockouts, and rests. Entries are grouped by round and filterable by kind; a resolved attack takes one line.
- Clocks while you fight. Track real time with pauses excluded, and in-game time at six seconds a round.
- Bring a stat block with you. Paste a creature as JSON, or use the free OpenFray Importer browser add-on to take one from a D&D Beyond page.
- Conditions explain themselves. Point at a condition anywhere it appears and its rules text comes up, the way spell names already did.
- Counters. Keep a manual tally for Exhaustion, a corruption track, or a countdown of your own.
- A handbook. Every part of the console, written out and illustrated, at openfray.app/docs.
Keep the next turn ready
The console keeps the details you need during a fight together:
- Initiative, rounds, and turns, with timed effects counting themselves down.
- Hit points, temporary hit points, and death saves.
- Creature resources: legendary actions, legendary resistance, recharge abilities, spell slots, and the reaction each creature gets back on its turn.
- Conditions, advantage, disadvantage, flat bonuses, and free-text reminders in the same effect controls.
- Concentration, checked the moment the damage lands.
- Group saves: one spell, every target rolling at once, with resistances and immunities already worked in.
- Dice you can check, because every roll is written into the game log with the numbers behind it.
The handbook explains the encounter estimates in how hard the fight looks and end of the fight.
Open the console to see the difficulty estimate change as you add creatures.
The libraries
Open Settings (the gear at the top right of the console) and tick the libraries your table uses. The beta includes these collections:
| Library | What it is |
|---|---|
| Basic Rules 2024 (SRD 5.2.1) | The newer rules. On by default. |
| Basic Rules 2014 (SRD 5.1) | The older rules, if that’s your table |
| Tome of Beasts 1, 2, and 3 | Three books from Kobold Press |
| The Waking Garden | 67 creatures, written for OpenFray |
| Brood & Bloom | 61 creatures, written for OpenFray |
The Waking Garden and Brood & Bloom are also free to read on this site.
What the beta leaves for later
This release does not yet include a read-only player view. Sharing turn order and conditions on a second screen is planned for a later release.
Keep your party ready for next week
A free account keeps your custom creatures, spells, player characters, and campaigns between sessions. Add your saved party to a fight and use the same house rules each time, without typing them again.
If you are new to the console, getting started walks through one fight from an empty board to the summary at the end.
Open the console to try an encounter. A Google or Discord sign-in saves your characters and custom creatures for the next one.
